What exactly is mindfulness? One definition reads, “To be conscious or aware of something.” Another reads, “focusing one’s awareness on the present moment, especially as part of a therapeutic or meditative technique.” So how do we become more mindful?

My mind is a battlefield. A constant stream of noise telling me that I should be doing this or that. Making me feel guilty if I sit down and do nothing for a few minutes, or if I sleep in an extra hour and ditch the morning run I said I would do. My mind is nonstop and it is quite exhausting. I think it really picked up once I turned 40 (which was not even a year ago). I laugh and say this must be how a mid-life crisis starts. I am not where I think I should be in life, at all. I am blessed and thankful but I really thought I would be in a better place. But what is a better place? Better financially? More friends? Married? Able to travel more? But my mind thinks there is something better. It just doesn’t know what. So I personally need to practice being more mindful.

I need to learn to enjoy being present in the present! I need to try and shut off the loud noises in my mind. Yes, sometimes those noises can motivate me to be better but they mostly drive me bonkers. I do think at the age of almost 41 I should be in a different place than I am, but for now I am where I am. And for that I am thankful. I am alive! I have a beautiful, healthy daughter who is officially a senior in high school. I have the most amazing parents that help us so much. And I have a very fulfilling job that allows me to make a difference.  So on paper life sounds pretty amazing right? So I need to focus on that, how amazing it truly is. I need to learn to live in the present and not constantly look towards the future.

Do you live in the present? Do you really appreciate what you have? Or are you always looking behind or in front of where you are currently? Let’s try at least for a day to really be mindful. Be mindful of where you are and what is going on in the moment. Don’t worry about what you will cook for dinner or what is going on this weekend. Don’t stress over bills that are coming up due. Just live right where you are. I think this will be a huge struggle for me personally but I think it will help my life be easier to deal with. Do it for one day and see if it was attainable and if so, how much did it help you to just relax?

Life is good and we are blessed. Now let’s just be mindful and be present.
